Defence
Attack in a 235/226.
- One of the fullbacks inverts to form a 2 in midfield with the DM while Wingers hold width.
- The opposite fullback not in midfield either makes the underlap or overlap either based on the wingers final third movement or the winger makes the run based on the space the fullback is surging into. The winger on the opposite flank without a fullback in the front 6 must hold width and have the CM or AM take up the half-space on that side of the pitch.
- The final shape is a 226 with the 2 CBs forming the 2 with the keeper able to sweep. The 2 in midfield is formed by the DM + one of the fullbacks. The 6 upfront has the CF central and the fullback + wingers + AM + CM take up the other positions in the front 6. Basically, 2 players hold width near the touchline, 2 players take the half-spaces and one of the CM or AM or Winger (who isn't holding width) plays off the striker.
- In building out from the back, it's all about passing diamonds. The GK must be heavily involved and ball progression should primarily be through the fullbacks with quick interplay until the play progresses down the flanks. If not, the CB can be direct and play into the CF who can hold up play for the AM to retain possession, or the CBs and play a direct ball over the top to a winger making a run-in behind.
