As one of the worst teams in the Championship in my view, Cardiff will be a genuine challenge. Despite having some promising young talent in places the squad is lacking in quality and has a number of positions with large amounts of ageing players. The aim will be to bring in some young talent from the budget we have and try and work the loan system to ensure a squad with decent quality.
Outs -
- Low potential young players - All unneeded and taking up squad places.
- Anthony Pilkington - Whilst an ok player for this level, Pilkington is a fairly useless player in terms of where I could actually play him. His high wages and the potentially decent sum of money we could get for him makes his chances of staying slim
- Rhys Healey - A young striker who won't see opportunities this year with a large number of different strikers at the club. Not actually a bad player but pretty expendable nonetheless.
- Brian Murphy - A summer signing who I see little worth in, Murphy will be sent out on loan or sold in January
- Rickie Lambert - Another somewhat pointless summer signing, Lambert will not see much game time and is set to leave on loan or in January on a permanent deal.
All somewhat unsurprising sales and will help raise cash for more young players
Ins -
- Tom Adeyemi - A player recalled from loan at MK Dons, Adeyemi is a fine option for the holding midfield role and provides a strong backup option for Gunnarsson.
- Emyr Huws - Another player returning from a loan, this time Ipswich. The former City man is a fine box to box midfielder who is a serious loss if at another club.
- Sullay Kaikai - Having shown his promise in League One and Two, Kaikai seems ready for the step up. A loan deal from Crystal Palace should allow us to have depth on the wings and a potential future signing on a permanent basis.
- Dimitri Oberlin - A need for a future goalscorer is plainly obvious. Whilst Kenneth Zohore is obviously talented, I feel a faster and more skilful option off the bench would do no harm to the variety of this team. This is where Oberlin comes in. With pace, strength and technique, Oberlin should be an excellent option off the bench or in partnering Zohore.
- Steven Bergwijn - The wings lack in depth and again this leads us to another promising young loanee. Bergwijn brings pace and technique and could be an excellent option when chasing games or as a back up option.
- Moses Odjer - A young midfielder at Salerno, Odjer could add huge stamina and box to box ability to the midfield role. His ability to shoot yet ease in the tackle should allow us to have an excellent chance at tiring out even the most high quality teams in this division.
- Rick van Drongelen - Another issue with the side is the lack of youthful center backs. This should be resolved partially by van Drongelen coming in from Sparta. An excellent player on the ground and in the air, he should get some experience this year and at 17 years old has lots of time to excel.
Pre-Contract Options
- John Ruddy
- Cedric Carasso
- Raul Lopez
- Federico Vega
- Josh Risdon
- Walker Zimmerman
- Sidney Pessinho
- Oscar Lewicki
- Mikel Agu
- Isaac Cuenca
- Jo Inge Berget
- Joselu
