Paying those high wages to players like Dzeko and even Hakan who priced out Milan. We pushed to get Gosens because of ambition, when there may have been wiser choices financially. We have pushed beyond our financial capacity with free agents like Onana and Thuram, who could have easily gone to better and richer clubs, but we pushed just enough financially to make it worth it for them. And of course we have kept our Italian core by making this the place to be if you want to be a big Italian player. We have done this with sacrifices of big players, but incredibly we have maintained our ambition. When we sign players, the animating question, despite our struggles, is usually not "Will this be a good investment?" but "Will this player help us win trophies?" That was the question that was asked when we signed Arnautovic, one of the most comically expensive deals we have ever made.
