Well yes there's always idiots who are either bias or just have a lack of football knowledge, I don't think anybody who knows anything about football would every truly say Rooney was as good as or could potentially be as good as some of the best to play the game. He did have a few good seasons. His 09/10 season was phenomenal, I think it was 37 goals and 7 assists in 45 games, was similar in his 11/12 season too. But yeah, if he maintained that for 6/7/8/9 years I think that's when you can argue he was one of the best but he was a little inconsistent. Although his versatility and his willingness to help the team did have an impact on his numbers, I personally think so anyway.

I did live in England for a time during the peak years of his career and there certainly were fans who were saying such things, so it wasn't just the media, and in that sense they were overrating him, but of course, it wasn't everyone, and the media can be a bit ridiculous, and if people rate him objectively then no, he wasn't overrated. And he still is a legend of the game domestically and for his country, without a doubt. Maybe as you said there was a period in a given season he might've been the best player in the world on form, but unfortunately he never was in a given season outright, which is what I was arguing. But anyone who denies that he was world class, or one of the best players in the world or of his generation is also being ridiculous.

I don't think anybody in England ever considered Rooney to be as good as Messi or Ronaldo nor did they ever think he'd be the next Pele. Our media is ridiculous and this is why most english peeps get tarnished with the same brush, he was way overhyped by newspapers etc but actual fans and just normal everyday folk were more than aware that Rooney was just a very good player and that was it, although yes for a brief period Rooney was probably one of the best in the world in terms of form and fitness but again, we were aware that in terms of 'the greats' such as Pele, Maradona, Ronaldo etc because no he isn't up there but its ridiculous to think or say that Rooney isn't a legend of the game? Because he is, it's as simple as that.

He wasn't overrated generally if you look at his career, goals, skillset, and success, and he was a very complete forward, but there were those who said he was going to be the next Pelé, or that he was the best player in the world, and that he was at Messi's and Cristiano Ronaldo's level, which wasn't actually the case, and he didn't live up to the potential that we expected of him. So in that sense, yes, he was a bit overhyped. He still had a great career, and being Man U's and England's top scorer and winning practically everything with Man U is impressive, especially considering he wasn't always an outright striker (although he was never the key player in their title victories in my opinion, even though he still contributed to winning them and was important), so it seems harsh to be critical of him, but objectively speaking, given how good he was at such a young age, I think people really expected him to win titles with England (or at least star and reach the last four in a major tournament), score 30+ league goals and 40+ club goals in a season, be the top scorer and outright star in the EPL and the UCL in a given season, and win the Ballon d'Or, and obviously he didn't do any of that, even though he did have a couple of prolific seasons. But I know this will be an unpopular opinion that will probably get downvoted and that I'll be accused of Rooney bashing, which isn't the case at all. He's still an England, Premier League, and Manchester United legend, but not an all-time great as many expected him to be; "just" a generational great, and one of the best in the world at his peak, but never THE best outright. Unfortunately in part this was because he didn't work hard enough in training or look after himself enough. To an extent his versatility also did him more harm than good and maybe he burnt out at a young age, and although he was physically gifted on top of his skill, his metabolism wasn't great either, but this was exacerbated by his lack of discipline. And although he had some injuries, there have been players with worse injuries throughout their career in similar positions whose longevity was more impressive, so it is a shame that he stopped playing at a high level at a fairly young age by today's standards.
